Google has finally released the much-anticipated Android Auto 6.1 update, and in addition to the changes under the hood, the company has also included two new features that anyone can enjoy after installing the new version.
The first of them is Backdrops, a feature everyone knew was coming, but nobody can say precisely when this was supposed to happen.
Android Auto does not allow users to set a custom image as wallpaper, but they can choose from a total of 15 different images directly from the main unit. There is a new wallpaper option in the Android Auto settings screen, and choosing a new one that takes effect immediately, without requiring any further input afterward.
Additionally, it appears that Google has also re-enabled Google Assistant actions in Android Auto, although for now, this appears to be something related to a server-side switch, not part of the new version. This feature isn’t available to me yet even though I have Android Auto 6.1 installed, however Others I managed to get it up and running in their cars.
The new update also comes with major improvements under the hood, and while there is no official changeover history available, a Ford spokesperson told us recently that Android Auto 6.1 solves a major issue in the 2021 F-150.
Starting with this release, Android Auto Wireless again works properly in the new F-150, as this feature was previously split, with drivers told to switch to the wired version. Ford claims the full overhaul will be part of an upcoming software update in the spring, with more details shared as its launch nears.
