Check out 14 features on Android 14. From lock screen customization, Health Connect, Ultra HDR and more, there's a lot to love about Android 14.
Google has officially unveiled Android 14, the latest version of its popular mobile operating system. Android 14 is designed to be the most personalized OS yet, with new features that adapt to your preferences, habits, and needs. Here are some of the highlights of Android 14 that you should know.
Material You: A new design language for Android
One of the most noticeable changes in Android 14 is the introduction of Material You, a new design language that lets you customize your device with your favorite colors, shapes, and fonts. Material You uses AI to extract colors from your wallpaper and apply them across the system and apps, creating a harmonious and unique look for your phone. You can also choose from a variety of themes and accents to further personalize your experience. Material You also adapts to different contexts, such as light and dark modes, accessibility settings, and device form factors.
Passkeys: A simpler and more secure way to sign in
Android 14 also brings a new way to sign in to apps and websites without passwords. Passkeys are based on the FIDO2 standard, which uses public-key cryptography to verify your identity. Passkeys are stored securely on your device and backed up by Google’s cloud, so you don’t have to worry about forgetting or losing them. Passkeys also work across devices, so you can sign in seamlessly on your phone, tablet, or Chromebook. Passkeys are more secure than passwords, as they are immune to phishing, brute force, and replay attacks.
Privacy Dashboard: A clear overview of your data permissions
Privacy is another key focus of Android 14, and one of the new features that enhances it is the Privacy Dashboard. The Privacy Dashboard gives you a clear overview of how apps access your location, camera, microphone, and other sensitive data. You can see which apps accessed your data and when, and revoke permissions if needed. You can also manage your privacy settings from the dashboard, such as turning on or off app hibernation, approximate location, or microphone and camera indicators.
Quick Tap: A handy gesture for shortcuts
Android 14 also introduces a new gesture called Quick Tap, which lets you perform actions by tapping the back of your phone. You can customize Quick Tap to do things like take a screenshot, play or pause music, launch Google Assistant, or open any app of your choice. Quick Tap works with most cases and doesn’t interfere with other gestures or taps on the screen.
These are just some of the new features that Android 14 offers. There are also improvements to notifications, widgets, media controls, accessibility, and more. Android 14 is currently available as a beta for Pixel devices and select phones from other manufacturers. The final release is expected in October 2023.
