Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced its latest VR headset, the Meta Quest 3, which promises to deliver a more immersive and realistic experience than ever before. The Meta Quest 3 is a standalone device that does not require a PC or a smartphone to operate, and it features a range of improvements over its predecessor, the Meta Quest 2.

The Meta Quest 3 boasts a higher resolution display, a more powerful processor, a slimmer and lighter design, and a new mixed reality technology that allows users to see and interact with their real surroundings in full color. The Meta Quest 3 also supports a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which means smoother and more responsive visuals.

The Meta Quest 3 is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, which offers a two-and-a-half times better graphical performance compared to the Quest 2’s XR2 Gen 1 chip. This enables VR experiences to offer more realistic physics and lighting, as well as fuller environments for users to explore and interact with. The Meta Quest 3 also has 8GB of RAM, which allows for more complex and dynamic scenes.

The Meta Quest 3 has a pair of LCD displays that offer 2,064 x 2,208 pixels per eye, up from the Quest 2’s 1,920 x 1,832 pixels per eye. This means sharper and clearer images that reduce the screen door effect. The Meta Quest 3 also has a lens adjustment scroll wheel that users can turn while wearing the headset to set the optimal distance between the lenses. Additionally, the Meta Quest 3 has a built-in adjustable spacer that makes room for glasses if users are wearing them.

One of the most exciting features of the Meta Quest 3 is its mixed reality technology, which uses four cameras and a depth sensor to map out the user’s real-world space and overlay virtual elements on top of it. Users can see their own hands and body in full color, as well as objects and people around them. Users can also interact with these elements using hand gestures or controllers. The mixed reality technology also enables new features like Augments, which are sort of mixed reality widgets that users can place in their environment. For example, users can place a virtual TV on their wall and watch their favorite shows while in VR.

The Meta Quest 3 is available for pre-order now starting at $499.99 / £479.99 for the base 128GB version, or $649.99 / £619.99 for the 512GB version. The Meta Quest 3 ill ship in all countries where Meta Quest is currently supported this fall2. Users who pre-order the Meta Quest 3 before January 27 will also get a free copy of Asgard’s Wrath 2, a VR action-adventure game set in Norse mythology.

The Meta Quest 3 is expected to be one of the best VR headsets on the market, offering a more immersive and realistic experience than ever before. With its improved performance, display, design, and mixed reality technology, the Meta Quest 3 aims to take VR and MR to the next level.
